US Adoption Updates

 Couple updates in this area…

First off, we heard yesterday that the Help HAITI Act has passed the House and is now awaiting President Obama's signature.  The Help HAITI Act's intention is to authorize the Department of Homeland Security to adjust the status of the children who entered the US from Haiti on humanitarian parole to permanent resident status.  Once the child's status is adjusted to permanent resident alien, they are eligible to obtain US citizenship.  This will significantly speed up the previous two year process to citizenship that children, who entered the US from Haiti under Category II in the humanitarian parole program, were facing.

So while we had made it past this stage (due to the stage of our paperwork) this will help MANY of our dear friends and those families who were able to bring their kids home after the earthquake.  This was wonderful news and we had continued to push this with our senators in Oregon…

Second, yesterday we received our response letter from DHS, saying:  “the State of Oregon does not plan to investigate or file a report on our adoption of Samuel because he was legally adopted in  Haiti and they see no reason to oppose this adoption.”

YAY!  So now we have to mail some more forms into the County Circuit Court, send money for a birth certificate and hopefully we will have an official US adoption (with a name change!) all done within a few more weeks!  Then we can get a social security number and passport for Samuel and really be DONE!  Hooray….
