Take it Back... More Paperwork Drama.

Just when we think we are on the road to DONE... we hit another wall with the adoption paperwork. I was "proudly" (maybe that was my sinful downfall!) looking at the birth certificate that had arrived in the mail, when I noticed that it had "Chancelet" as the first name. I was perplexed and wondered how anyone would officially know his name was Samuel.  So I double checked the court documents - and sure enough, it said that Vital Stats: "shall issue a new birth certificate with his new name, Samuel Chancelet Wilkins."

I fortunately found a "real" contact person at Vital Records and we have been going back and forth on this all day (both email and phone.)  This was what they responded (which sent me in a downward spiral.)

We checked our sealed file and there appears to be an error on the Adoption Report which states on line 26 that the name after adoption is Chancelet Maurice Wilkins. We do not have a certified copy of the adoption decree. For us to use the decree instead of the certified adoption report that we received, we will need an original certified copy of the decree. We cannot accept a photocopy of it or a faxed or emailed copy.

...SIGH.

So we have to have a certified copy of the US Adoption Decree and then send it in with the wrong birth certificate and they would change things.  But honestly - I didn't even know we had a US Adoption Decree - I thought that was only from Haiti (and there is no way we are getting a certified copy of that one, given there is no paperwork left!)

MORE HEADACHES...  will this ever end?  I guess the SSN and passport work is now postponed until we get this figured out.  Fortunately I had applied for an ATIN (adoption tax number) so we can at least do our taxes.  I am really praying this will be "easy" to fix, but if we have to change something with the courts, it will probably require a lawyer.

  1. Ugh.... so discouraging. We had a foul up on one of our documents with a name also. It just took the right person to go out of her way to get the document corrected without us filling out the paperwork we were supposed to fill out. I know with your persistence, this will happen... hopefully sooner and not later.

    Blessings,
    Beth
