Subject: Election Results are announced!
We waited all night and finally at about 7:35 AM the election board announced that the ballot will include Mrs. Mirlande Manigat and Mr. Michel Martelly! I personally am happy to see that the people's choices are on the ballot. If Jude Celestin had been on that ballot instead of Martelly, we would have had civil war in Haiti! Finally, democracy had a voice in Haiti today. (At least for the Presidential position!) Some of the other positions that were voted on still show President Preval's party to be number one which many people argue cannot be true, but I think the Presidential ballot is what most people were fighting over. It took pressure from the international community to get the "right" thing done, but finally justice prevailed. Maybe the whole election results should have been voided and then started over, but then President Preval would have been in office longer and the people are not willing to accept him there any longer. The Haitian people are ready to move on, rebuild, and are demanding a strong and progressive thinking President! I pray that God makes the winner a strong person with lots of wisdom. I pray they love their country so much that they put it before all of their personal interests and sees that it is rebuilt to it's former glory of even just 30 years ago! Many people here can remember a time when families walked the streets at night and went and sat in the parks not afraid of being attacked. They stood outside their gates and visited with their neighbors. People want a little bit of that Haiti back again! Democracy sounds good but Haiti had a "democracy" in name only for 10 years! I pray that this announcement is the first step toward making Haiti a true democracy where the people's voices can be heard in ways other than burning of tires, breaking of windows, and killing each other in the streets! I understand that rioting is the only way they feel they can make their wishes known. Nobody listens to them otherwise. I pray that today is a day of change for the future of Haiti! |
